On Our Doorstep is a pop-up community art project in Cleator Moor.

It’s a chance for you to enjoy free arts and crafts activities in your own community, delivered by professional artists from across west Cumbria.

The workshops are drop-in sessions and there is always a free buffet! We like to nourish your stomach as well as your creative soul.

It’s a relaxed, safe space where everyone is made to feel welcome.

Research shows that taking part in art and craft activities can be good for mental wellbeing. It can help bring communities together, and even build new friendships.

On Our Doorstep is delivered by Cumberland Council and supported by the Sellafield Social Impact Fund.

Who is it for?

It’s open to everyone who lives - or has lived - in the town, in the surrounding villages, is visiting, or who feels they have a local connection.

It’s family friendly and all ages are welcome. We ask that younger children are supervised at all times during the activities.

No arts or crafts experience is necessary.

You can work on your own or with others.

You’ll learn new skills at your own pace, with the right materials and support.

A warm welcome is guaranteed - bring friends and family of all ages.

What will we be doing?

We’ll be making some amazing creations which explore your town and community in new, fun ways.

We’ll be talking about places that matter to you, activities you love, memories, heritage, events, green spaces and those little details about the town that make it special.

The activities include:

Funny Fyaces: making funny portraits of yourself, your friends and family, or make-believe characters, using collage and drawing techniques

Mask Making: Turn your Funny Fyace into a wearable mask!

Spontaneous Signposts: Paint a colourful sign showcasing your favourite things about Cleator Moor and the community here

Wild Map Making: Put your favourite places and memories on a fabulous ‘alternative’ map of the town

Design a Tile: Create patterns inspired by local heritage, architecture, activities and nature, and we’ll use them to build a community mosaic

Film Making: Learn how to film your own short clips (bring a smartphone) and we’ll compile a short film celebrating our home town

Carnival Colour: Explore historic photographs of Cleator Moor’s famous carnival, and bring them to life with coloured patterns and stencils

You will also have the chance to have your work exhibited along with others, at an exciting public venue.
